Founded in 1949 by Victor Paschkis, a Viennese engineer, SSRS was an international body of scientific and technical professionals who took personal responsibility for the consequences of their scientific research. Walter Ford Gormley, a native of Mount Vernon (Iowa) received his B.S. (1939) from Iowa State College (University) in Mechanical Engineering. During World War II, Gormley was incarcerated for 3 years in a government-sanctioned work camp for being a conscientious objector. After the war, Gormley continued his anti-war activities and also refused to pay his federal income taxes.
